Before this year, I had never even shot a festival before, only concerts..... but I somehow ended up covering 7 festivals between the months of May-September and I can't complain at all, the vibe and atmosphere at festivals is much much greater than any concert.
The first festival I shot was " Ever After Music Festival" In Kitchener, ON for Into The Crowd Magazine. This was the first year of the Electronic music festival but the line up did not disappoint with acts such as Diplo, Benny Benassi, Flosstradamus and Keys N Krates performing throughout the 2 day event.
Next up Was "Bestival"... A 2 day festival brought from England, for it's first year on the Toronto Islands in Toronto, ON. I shot this one for Beyond The Drop. This was an amazing festival as it featured artists from all types of music genres. In the Bacardi Big Top Tent, we saw artists such as Flosstradamus, Keys N Krates, Rudimental, and SBTRKT. The Bollywood Temple inspired stageplayed home to Dj's such as Bestival Co-Founder Rob Da Bank, Jamie XX and Nicole Moudaber. The main stage was reserved for the live acts that included Nas, Florence and the machine, Alessia Cara and Banks. Besides the 3 larger stages, there was also a DJ booth set up on the Beach connected to the festival grounds for people to enjoy some music while working on their tans. But besides these stages... The Bestival grounds were full of other things to enjoy, such as the inflatable church which held mock weddings between festival goers throughout the weekend, there were giant trees with hammocks and bean-bag chairs and any other comfortable seating option you could think of, and many many more activities to partake it apart from the music itself. Bringing the festival to Toronto was a huge success and I can't wait for next year.
After Bestival came Wayhome... Another first year festival brought over to Canada with the help of Bonnaroo Co-Founder and AC Entertainment president Ashley Capps. This was a 3 day Camping (optional) festival that took place in Oro-Medonte, ON... new home of the Boots and Hearts music festival. This festival was a little different for me as my job for the weekend wasn't to shoot the music, I was working for Somersby and my objective for the weekend was to capture Somersby in whatever way I could throughout the festival. I did decide to shoot just one artist though, which was Kendrick Lamar. Accompanying him throughout the festival were huge acts such as Sam Smith, Neil Young And The Promise Of The Real...who performed a 3 hour set to close out Friday night, as well as Hozier, Brandon Flowers, Bassnectar, Odesza and many many more acts scattered about 4 stages throughout the weekend.
Next was Veld, A huge Electronic Music festival that has taken place in Toronto for the past few years. This was another one I shot for Beyond The Drop. Like every other festival in Toronto this season... the weather was terrible. The first day was postponed for a few hours due to the chance of a storm then the second was cancelled after just a few hours due to an approaching storm which was a good call as the wind, rain, hail and lightning would not have been a good time. Some of the larger acts scheduled for this festival included Dj's like Steve Aoki, Deadmau5 and DVBBS, as well as some live acts including A$AP Rocky and ILoveMakonnen.
The last 3 of the season were Super Crawl In Hamilton, ON( For Indie88)... Time Festival In Toronto, ON (For Beyond The Drop) and TURF (For Myself) also in Toronto, ON. These 3 were a little more relaxing to end off the festival season. Filled with a mixture of Rap/Hip Hop, Folk, Rock, Indie and even some Soul throughout the 3 festivals. Some of my favourite artists from these 3 include Passenger, Sate, Birds Of Bellwoods, Monster Truck and The Avett Brothers.
Huge Shoutout to Into The Crowd Magazine, Beyond The Drop, Indie88 and Somersby for the opportunities this year. Can't wait to do it all again in 2016!
